6 Tips to Survive College Move Out

Moving is hard, but college move out can be overwhelming. The end of the semester is already tough, but finals, leaving your friends, and adjusting to being back at home for the summer can easily add on to the stress.

It’s so important to have a plan before. Here are six tips to survive college move out:

  1. Try To Pack Before Finals: A HUGE mistake that students make when it comes to moving out for the summer is waiting until the morning of move-out to pack. The only thing this causes is extra stress. Conversely, try to pack your things in between study breaks on the week before and the week of finals. Go through the shelves and wardrobes and empty out the clothes you wore during the winter, take down any decor you put up, and pack all of the items in a sturdy box. Once that is completed, you’ll realize that you already have at least half of your room packed!
  1. Ship Items Beforehand: Living at your university = being away from home = forgetting how much stuff you truly have. If home is far from campus, and you didn’t take things home with you during spring break (if you had spring break this year), consider shipping some items home before finals. This will ensure you have more free time later, and of course, less items in your room to worry about.

  1. Save Important Notes and Books: Even though you have taken your finals and don’t want to think about studying anymore, you need to decide on which books and notes to keep. When it comes to notes, don’t retain them unless they’ll be helpful later on in your academic or professional career. Similarly, don’t just retain textbooks if you won’t refer back to them later. If you don’t need your textbooks, try to pass them on to other students (sell it to them for extra cash or just gift it to them), the campus bookstore, or online retailers.
  1. Create An Essentials List: Of course you’ll need a few clothes and toiletry items in the days prior to your move out date, so think about which items can be packed at the last minute. Things like your toothbrush, face wash, and at least one clean set of clothes should always be left out if you’re packing a few days before move-out. Other large, soft items, like bedding can be packed last minute because it can fit in between boxes.
Pro-tip: Make sure you actually have boxes and storage containers on hand ahead of time. They are definitely essentials! Getting these items during the week of move-out will be difficult since everybody needs them.
  1. Ask Around For Storage If You Live Out Of State: Consider storing your belongings in a storage facility if you stay far from home, in a different state, or even in a different country. Comparing storage facilities online ahead of time and reviewing pricing is already a good idea. Decide on what size of storage unit you need, the amount of months you’ll be renting the unit, and if it makes sense for your budget. You could also split one storage unit with some friends if you’ll all be returning to campus next semester. The sooner you book a storage unit, the sooner you can pack up your dorm room or apartment. Most storage facilities will have discounts available to college students too, so ALWAYS make sure to ask for that!

  1. Look For Professionals: If you are moving from your dorm room, or even to a new space for the summer or after graduation, hire a company to help you get things packed up to give you more time to focus on your finals.
